Urban Sustainable Living

Can't recall if this site has been mentioned before but for those of you GIMers stuck in the city looking to be more self sufficient here is a good site to check out. Looked at a few of her videos and they're good for people starting out, plus she's easy on the eyes which always helps.

Want fish and vegetables from the most efficient system?

If you live in suburbia and can install a polyrainwater tank this site is a must...

http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/

These systems can also be installed on high rise balconies. My favorite is the no-fish system that runs on urine alone...:bear_w00t:

For all the feacaphobes out there don't forget to check out self composting toilets as well 'cause when the mains water pumps stop, your toilet, should you foolishly continue to use it, is going to turn to a cesspit overnight ...imagine a cholera/typhoid/ecoli cocktail...mmmm

All you need for a self composting toilet is a good supply of carbon (I use shredded junkmail) and some form of ventilation and or passive heating (break it down faster)...

I always envisage waste disposal being the last concern during the good times but the first thing they'll lament when it gets rough...

Cool...that's some really good stuff for someone like me just starting out. Exactly the kind of stuff I've been thinking about, just didn't know where to start. Thanks for sharing.

Why bother. A good shovel is all that is needed.

Squatting is healthier and you don't need so much paper, if any.

1. efficacy
2. to use elsewhere for cropping

3. I agree, though my partner doesn't...

URBAN living= pack up and flee.
as for human waste disposal, I have a hole in the ground with a narrow shack perched above. wife has been making some noise about a fancy flush toilet for a few years.... might just have to surprise her one day.

I agree, "urban" and "sustainable" cannot be in the same sentence. Urban life, aka metropolis/city life, is based upon the extraction and removal of "resources" from somewhere that can support life to somewhere where it cannot support the same amount of life. Cities are not sustainable if you consider the earth and its biosphere a worthwhile investment for the future.

My bickering aside, that website is cool and useful. thanks.
